   Moss's walk - No 3 - 22nd May 2004

Well today was the day of my walk and we could not have asked for a better day with blue sky and a lot of sun.

We met in the church car park and there were nine of them and I had a new friend whose name is Poppy. We squeezed into two cars and we went to Newby Bridge where some of them put on boots or trainers and then we started to walk. Polly has got so much energy! I thought I was good at running about and sniffing everything in sight but she was a master. We walked up a hill in some woods and I think that was just to get us all breathing properly although I did hear the odd “are we nearly there yet?” from some people. At the top of the hill we came to some fields and there was a nice view of Finsthwaite church. I was a bit disappointed because I heard Him point out some deer and I did not see them so I could not chase them. I have never caught one and I don’t know what I would do if I did . They are much faster than I am anyway.

We had to cross some stiles and Poppy has not had as much experience as I have so she had to be helped a bit but she knew what to do when we met the sheep and was very good, like me. While we were walking over this stretch we had to pose for photographs. She got her new camera out and made us move off the path into some bog so that she could have a better background. Anyway I sat and looked pleasant and then we moved on to Finsthwaite Church. Some of them went inside and had a look round while we stayed outside in the sun and some had a Naafi break as He calls it. The inside of the church was very interesting I was told. There was a communion set made by the craftsmen of one of the Motor Transport Companies in Italy in the war. It was made of wood from a pontoon bridge and bits of shell cases and base plates. You can guess who was interested in this. There were also memorials to “Intelligent” magistrates. The inference is that there were some not so intelligent in the 19th Century!

We then got to the best bit, which was the lakes at High Dam. I was just itching to get into the water to swim but they could not find stick for me at first and I would not go for the stick that was already in the water as that belonged to the two Labradors who were also playing there. Still, they were all very good and went hunting sticks and I was soon showing off my swimming. Poppy did not like the water, which was a bit of a surprise because Spaniels are water dogs I thought. She liked mud though and was made to go in the water to wash it off. Lunch was served overlooking the top lake and I got my biscuits and She reminded every one that I was not to have any of their picnics. I am sure that it would not harm me and Rosemary’s pie looked very nice. It came from someone called “Higgy”. He seemed a very popular person.

On the way back we talked to some horses but I was pleased they ignored me. They were a bit big. We also went though a group (it was not big enough to be a herd) of cows who did not seem too bothered. I wonder if they were related to the one I helped shoo back into the field at Lindale? He got the path back slightly wrong so we did not go up to the Folly. I could have told him where he had gone wrong but I doubt he would have listened because he always thinks he knows. Anyway it was a slightly gentler path and I don’t think anyone noticed. They know now!

The pub was good. I lay out in the sun and they had assorted drinks but no ice cream, which is what Helen wanted. Apparently the lady behind the bar laughed when it was suggested which did not please the two men folk. He made a friend of a caterpillar, which crawled all round the front of his shirt until it was rescued by a little boy at the next table. We went back to the church and my friends left in their own cars. If I had known that two of my fans were in church doing the cleaning I would have come in and said hello. I have been into say hello to the workmen. They won’t feed me either!

Thank you very much for coming on my walk.  Bye for now

Love MOSS
